Handheld Computers at Beaver Ponds
Our seventh graders made their annual trek to the Beaver Ponds on a recent beautiful, warm fall day. The students participated in cross-curricular activities, several of which included integration of handheld computers.
The students used the computers with science probes to test the pond water for temperature, ph levels, etc. This data was later downloaded to spreadsheets back at school for analysis. The students also used GPS devices with the handhelds to complete a scavenger hunt and took digital pictures with attached cameras. The students will insert the pictures into PowerPoint presentations and will do some technical writing about their experiences at Beaver Ponds.
Teachers began integrating the handheld computers into their Beaver Ponds curriculum about three years ago after we obtained them through a Hands-on Learning grant.
